Come ogni anno a metà Settembre, e giusto prima dell’inizio della nuova stagione televisiva, arriva la notte degli Emmy Awards, giunti alla 68° edizione e andati in scena Domenica 19 Settembre a Los Angeles.
L’edizione del 2016 ancora una volta segna il distacco netto che la critica (e anche il pubblico) riscontra tra le produzioni dei network via cavo rispetto ai canali generalisti (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW). Non è una novità, però è un trend in costante crescita già ben visibile dal numero di nomination spartite. Si può disquisire quanto si vuole sulla “qualità” delle nomination stesse perchè, in fin dei conti, vedere un Peter Dinklage nominato come “Miglior Attore non protagonista in una Serie Drammatica” alla luce del minutaggio e della caratura della sua interpretazione nell’ultima stagione di Game Of Thrones fa storcere il naso. Lo stesso dicasi anche per un David Schwimmer o un Johm Travolta, entrambi candidati come “Miglior Attore non protagonista un Film TV/Serie Limitata” per le performance in American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson. Alla luce di ciò si potrebbe (giustamente) pensare che nomination e relativi vincitori siano votati da giornalisti ciechi o faziosi, però va ricordato che è l’Academy of Television Arts & Sciences a prendere decisioni, ovvero oltre 15.000 individui appartenenti a 28 ordini professionali differenti, una più che discreta giuria insomma. Le critiche sono sempre molto aspre sia prima delle nomination che dopo l’annuncio dei vincitori, in tal senso pensiamo di aver già fatto capire la nostra opinione e andremo a glissare i commenti su tutto ciò che segue. Anche sull’assenza di una nomination qualsiasi a The Leftovers.
Alla vigilia della serata, le serie più nominate quest’anno erano American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson (13), Veep (10), Game Of Thrones (9), Fargo (8), The Night ManagerSilicon Valley (6); a conferma di quanto detto sopra, i network con il maggior numero di nomination in assoluto sono tutti cable network: HBO (40), FX (28) e Netflix (17).

Non sono state moltissime le sorprese della serata a parte l’immeritata seconda vittoria consecutiva di Game Of Thrones come “Miglior Serie Drama”, però ci sono state. Veep  e Game Of Thrones entrano nella storia con, rispettivamente, il 5° Emmy consecutivo di Julia
Louis-Dreyfus come “Miglior Attrice in una serie Comedy” e come serie con più Emmy vinti battendo i 37 vinti da Frasier. Entrambe si confermano come migliori serie nelle loro rispettive categorie, un evento, questo, da non sottovalutare e che garantisce anche una certa continuità storica non indifferente. Tra i migliori drama la concorrenza agguerrita di Better Call Saul e Mr. Robot non garantiva assolutamente una vittoria così scontata, lo stesso discorso vale tra le comedy per l’ingombrante presenza di Modern Family, Transparent e Silicon Valley. Esattamente come successo l’anno scorso per “Mother’s Mercy“, Game Of Thrones si aggiudica anche gli Emmy per “Miglior Sceneggiatura per una serie Drama” e “Miglior Regia per una serie Drama” grazie a “Battle Of The Bastards“.
E’ però American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson a sfondare facendo incetta di premi (tra cui “Miglior Serie Limitata”) e mantenendo alte le aspettative: addirittura 9 premi su 13 nomination, a conferma di quanto apprezzata sia stata questa 1° stagione. Inoltre onore al merito per il riconoscimento a Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) per l’Emmy come “Migliore Attore in una Serie Drama”, premio dato in riferimento alla scorsa stagione ma che anche nelle puntate in onda in questi giorni si conferma più che giusto. Menzione d’onore va fatta poi a Maggie Smith che, alla veneranda età di 81 anni, per la 3° volta vince un Emmy grazie al ruolo di Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey.
Onore ai vinti e gloria ai vincitori. Ci sarà tempo per recuperare nella 68° edizione.
